Jumping or falling into terrain that has not loaded yet
In a big world the ground ahead is built as you approach, and a fast run or a long leap can outrun it. The character then drops through empty space, dies far below, or lands with a huge fall after a hitch. Here is how to pause the fall safely and resume without a lurch.
Why this works
Not knowing is different from nothing being there. If the game can say that the ground is not yet known, it can hold the player in the air and resume the fall once the world arrives, instead of letting them drop through the empty world.
When not to use it
Unneeded in small levels that load completely before play starts. And wrong to hold forever: if the world never arrives, the player is stuck. Give up after a while and send them back to a safe place or show a clear message.
