The autosave overwrote my good save with a broken one
One autosave slot means one bad write destroys everything. This entry gives your AI a small rotating set of slots with a check on each, which loads the newest one that is still whole and always keeps a good one when it saves.
Why this works
A save can fail at any moment, so the only safe rule is that the last good copy is never the one being written. Rotating over several slots and checking each with a fingerprint makes that rule automatic.
When not to use it
Skip it for tiny games where the whole save is one setting. A second copy next to the first is then enough, and slots are more machinery than the problem needs.
