Write story text that survives the buildings and people it names being gone

Events written weeks ago still say "the old mill" after the player has burned it down, or after it was rebuilt as something else. Here is how to refer to places in the story so the words always match what stands today, and nothing shows a broken placeholder.

Why this works

A story written in advance cannot know what the player will have done to the world. Naming places through a lookup, not by fixed words, lets the same sentence stay true whether the place stands, lies in ruins or became something else.

When not to use it

Not worth it for text that is meant to be fixed, like a letter, a diary or a flashback that describes a place as it once was. Those should keep their words. Also awkward where grammar bends heavily, so write whole variants instead.
