How many hours is my story game really, for a first playthrough?

Telling people how long a story takes sounds easy, but the average is skewed by replays, by players who skipped most of the text, and by those who never finished. This entry shows which runs to count and gives a range to quote instead of a single number that is wrong for most.

Why this works

A single number hides how different people read. Counting only first-time finishers who actually read, and giving a range instead of one figure, answers what a new reader should expect. Saying how many were left out keeps the promise honest.

When not to use it

Do not use it for stories with many branches where one run sees a fraction of the whole, or when most players never finish. The number then describes a small, odd group. Give the length of one path and say how many exist.
