Do my hints actually help? What players do after each step of a hint ladder
Many story games give hints in steps, each more direct than the last. If most players still leave after the final hint, the ladder fails them. This entry shows how to read what happens after each step: solved, asked for more, left, or still stuck, so you know which step to rewrite.
Why this works
A hint is judged by what comes next, and what comes next is one of a few clear things: the puzzle is solved, another hint is opened, the player leaves, or nothing. Looking at each step alone shows which one helps and which one confuses or gives too little.
When not to use it
Do not use it when hints are not a ladder, for example one open help page, or when the puzzle can be solved long after, by thinking away from the screen. A short window would then miss real help. Ask players instead.
