Let a marching block step in time, and let it fall out of step smoothly when it charges

A drilled column looks best when every foot hits the ground together, a charging mob when nobody does. Switching between the two in one frame makes the whole army twitch. This entry gives one number per unit that fades the group in and out of step over time, and shows which clock they all share.

Why this works

Marching together is a state of order, and order is lost gradually, not in one frame. One shared beat with a personal shift that fades in and out lets a block snap tight quickly and fall apart slowly, as people do.

When not to use it

Skip it for irregular groups such as refugees, monsters, a market crowd or a mob. Marching in step would make them look drilled, which tells the wrong story. Keep their steps independent.
