Switch a unit between idle, walk and run without flickering as its speed wobbles

Units in a crowd change speed all the time because of slopes, queues and speed bonuses. If the walk and run pictures swap at one exact speed, a unit near that speed jumps between them. Here is how to separate the two switching points and how fast each clip should then play.

Why this works

Speed is never perfectly steady, so any single line between walking and running gets crossed back and forth. Making it easier to stay in a gait than to enter it gives the picture a calm middle, and playing the clip at the speed it really moves keeps the feet on the ground.

When not to use it

Wrong when the gait is a deliberate choice, like a sprint button or a sneak key. Then the player's input should pick the gait directly, and speed should follow it, not the other way round.
