Swing a crane, tower or siege arm to an angle and brake to stop exactly on it

A heavy arm that starts and stops instantly looks weightless, and one that eases in with a simple smoothing curve either overshoots or crawls for ages at the end. This entry makes the arm accelerate, cruise and brake so that it stops on the target, whatever the distance.

Why this works

A heavy thing cannot stop at once, so the only speed that is safe at any moment is the one from which it can still stop in the distance that remains. Following that limit gives a smooth start, a steady middle and an exact stop, even for short moves.

When not to use it

Don't use it for things that should feel light or snappy, like a cursor, a menu highlight or a fast fighter jet. Moving them straight to the goal in a short fixed time feels better than a long gentle brake.
