Pick the right one of eight facing pictures without flicker on the borders

Strategy units are often drawn from eight sides. When a unit walks along a direction that sits right between two of them, it flickers back and forth between the pictures every few frames. This entry shows what to compare so the picture changes only when it really should.

Why this works

Choosing the nearest picture draws a hard line, and a heading that wobbles across a hard line flips every frame. If the current picture stays until the heading has clearly left its zone, the flip needs a real change rather than a tiny wobble.

When not to use it

Don't use it when the picture should react instantly, such as a fast shooter whose aim sprite must match the cursor exactly, or when you have so many pictures that a border is invisible. Rotate a single picture smoothly instead.
