Choose the facing picture for units in a tilted-view map from the screen, not the ground

On a map seen from a slanted angle, a unit that walks diagonally on the ground may appear to walk straight down the screen, yet the game shows the picture for another direction. Soldiers then seem to walk sideways. Here is the conversion needed before any direction is turned into a sprite.

Why this works

The player judges direction by what is on the screen, not by the hidden ground grid. A tilted view squashes one axis, so a direction that looks like straight down on screen is a diagonal on the ground. Convert to the screen first, then choose the picture.

When not to use it

Not needed in a true top-down view or a side view, where the ground and the screen agree. It is also the wrong tool for fully three-dimensional games with a free camera, where the picture must depend on where the camera stands.
