After how many scares do testers stop being scared?

The tenth scare never hits like the first. This entry finds the moment where your testers get used to it, and explains why the obvious average over everyone gives a rosier picture than the truth, because the easily frightened testers leave early.

Why this works

People get used to what repeats, so a scare loses bite by comparison with the first. Measuring each tester against their own first reaction cancels differences in nerves, and waiting for the drop to last stops one distracted moment from counting.

When not to use it

Getting used to it is no failure if the story wants numbness, or if later scares differ in kind and not in strength. Then compare like with like, or look for the break in the pattern that shocks again.
