Spielerando

How long do players go without getting anything new or exciting?

Even a game full of rewards can have long stretches where nothing is gained, and small coins do not fix that. This entry shows how to find each player's longest dry spell and which rewards should count.

Why this works

Players feel the gap between things that change what they can do, not the pile of small prizes. Measuring the longest quiet stretch for each person, with the start and the end counted, catches the dry spell an average hides.

When not to use it

Wrong for slow, calm games where the world itself is the reward, such as walking or building games: a long gap is the design there. Ask players whether they felt bored instead of counting gaps.
