Players reload again and again until a failed lockpick or persuasion finally works

A skill check with a dice roll is meaningless if the player can reload and roll again. Here is a way to remember failures in the save, to allow another try only when the hero has actually grown, and to keep the roll itself out of the save.

Why this works

A chance only means something if it is drawn once. Remembering that the hero failed, and what the hero could do at that time, turns a repeatable gamble into a decision: the player has to change something real before a new try. Growth is a clear goal, while reloading is not.

When not to use it

Do not use it in a light game where a failed try is cheap and funny, such as a silly mini challenge, or where the hero cannot grow at all. A permanent lock there is just a dead end. Let the player try again freely and make failure cost a little instead.
