Autosaves overwrite the last good save from before the player's fatal decision

The player realizes an hour too late that a choice ruined the story, and every autosave already contains the mistake. Here is a small rotating set of autosaves, plus a few saves that are never overwritten, and how to skip a save when nothing changed.

Why this works

A mistake is only noticed later, so the safe copy has to be older than the mistake. A few rolling saves cover recent regret, saves kept at points of no return cover the big ones, and skipping an unchanged state stops idle time from quietly pushing out the good copies.

When not to use it

Do not use it when each save is large, on a small device, or in a game with one short sitting where a single save is enough. Many copies then waste space. A small game can keep one autosave and let the player save by hand before risky moments.
