The collection counter shows over a hundred percent or never reaches it after an update
You add, remove or rename collectibles, and old players are suddenly at an impossible number or stuck one short. Here is how to count only what still exists, count a renamed piece once, and avoid showing a full score before it is really full.
Why this works
A percentage is an answer to today's question, so it should be asked fresh each time. Saving what was found, rather than how much, lets the game count against the list as it is now, and a changed list changes the sum honestly.
When not to use it
Do not show a percentage where the total is unknown or endless, such as an open world with unlimited secrets or random loot. A bare count of finds is more honest there. A progress bar toward a goal that moves only frustrates.
