Stop a friendship label from flipping back and forth

One gift makes someone a friend and one rude remark makes them wary again, over and over, until the label means nothing. Here is the rule for when a relationship changes name, and why the way in and the way out must not be the same line.

Why this works

A name for a relationship is a claim about a lasting state, so it should not change on every small nudge. Asking for more to earn a label than to keep it gives a buffer, and the label stays steady while the story beats tied to it fire once.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player should feel every single act at once, such as a tense negotiation or a short duel of wits. A buffer hides cause and effect there. Show the raw number or a meter that moves freely.
