Show a character under the name each observer knows them by
The masked stranger is also the old lord, but the villagers and your hero must keep calling him by the name they know until the reveal. Here is how to store the names with what unlocks them and catch lines that use one too early.
Why this works
A name is something a person knows, not something a character has. So what appears on screen should depend on what the one looking has learned, while the character stays a single person underneath. That way a hidden identity is kept until the reveal, not leaked by a careless line.
When not to use it
Skip it when the double identity is not a secret, or when every name is used by everyone from the start, as with a title and a first name. A plain list of aliases is enough and easier to keep.
