Find ages and family ties in your cast that cannot be true
The queen is only nine years older than her daughter, or the prince is born after his mother's death years ago. When a story jumps decades, these slips are easy to write and hard to spot. Here is the list of rules to run over the whole cast.
Why this works
Families follow hard facts of life: nobody is born before a parent could be old enough, and nobody is parented by someone already gone. Because a long story is written in pieces, a mechanical pass over birth and death years finds slips that no one reading chapter by chapter would see.
When not to use it
Skip it in a fantasy where beings live very long, age differently or are made rather than born. Real-life limits would flag things that are meant to happen. Write your own limits for that world and check against them instead.
