Spielerando

After which failed attempt do players stop trying?

A hard boss is fine if people keep trying and a problem if they leave after the third death. Counting how many leave after each failure shows the exact point, and avoids the mistake of comparing groups of very different size.

Why this works

After each failure the question is how many of those still trying walk away, not how many walk away in total. Dividing by those who are still in the running makes each failure comparable, even though fewer people reach the later ones.

When not to use it

Skip it when a fight is meant to be won on the first or second try, or when players can leave for good reasons unrelated to the fight, like a session ending. There, look at how the fight is taught or how long the walk back takes.
