Spielerando

How long can an unskippable-feeling cutscene be before players start skipping?

If many players press skip at second ten, the scene is too long or too slow, whatever you think of its quality. This entry shows how to read the skip button as a sign of patience and to cut the scene where people still stay.

Why this works

Pressing skip is a vote with a time stamp. The moment the share of skippers starts to climb shows where patience ends, so you can cut at that point and keep what people actually stay for, instead of arguing about taste.

When not to use it

Skip it when the scene carries information the player needs, or when it is short enough that skipping is only habit. Then make the scene shorter, split it into parts, or move the needed information into play where it cannot be skipped.
