Spielerando

Is my optional hard path a fun dare or a trap that makes players quit?

Many players take an optional challenge, but that alone does not say whether it was a good idea for them. This entry shows which three numbers to read together to tell a welcome dare from a trap that sends people away.

Why this works

A dare is good only if failing it does not make people leave. The fair comparison is with those who declined the same offer, since players quit anyway at the end of an evening, and a trap is one that many enter, few survive and the failed leave over.

When not to use it

Does not apply when few players ever take the option; nobody fell in, so improve the signposting instead. Also skip it for challenges that are meant to be brutal and sold as such.
