Make room codes that friends can read out loud and type without mistakes

Friends join your game by a short code they get over voice chat or a text message. If the code can be confused or two rooms get the same one, someone ends up in the wrong game. Here is how to build codes that survive being read aloud, and what to do with a typo.

Why this works

A code is passed along by voice and by eye, so it has to survive both. Removing characters that look or sound alike, and cleaning what is typed, means the only mistakes left are ones the game can name and point to.

When not to use it

Skip it when rooms are joined by a link, an invitation inside the game, or a friends list: nobody types anything, and a code only adds a step. Also use something longer if rooms hold money or private chats.
