Keep my own character smooth online without being pulled back by the server
In an online game your character should react at once, yet the server has the last word. If you handle the server's answer naively, your figure jerks backwards or jitters on every step. Here is how the answer is merged with what you already did, so movement stays calm.
Why this works
The server is right about the past, the player is right about the present. Moving at once keeps the game responsive, and re-playing only the moves the server has not yet seen lets both agree without the figure ever being pulled back.
When not to use it
Skip it for slow, turn-based or card games, where waiting for the answer costs nothing. It also fails when the outcome depends on other players in ways you cannot guess, such as a collision. There, let the server decide and show a short delay.
