Bring old saved games into line when the story's facts are renamed
After an update the story may know a fact under a new name, drop one, or add one that older saves never had, and a player coming back after months must not find the story broken. Here is how to carry any old save forward, step by step, without losing or inventing progress.
Why this works
A player's save is a promise that their time was not wasted. Upgrading it one version at a time, with small steps that never overwrite what was earned, brings any old save forward and keeps doing so safely if repeated.
When not to use it
Skip it when the change is so deep that an old save cannot make sense, such as a rewritten story. Then say so clearly and offer a fresh start with some bonus, instead of a quiet conversion that leaves a broken world.
