Let villagers share news while it is fresh and drop it when it is stale
A villager who still talks about last month's storm as if it happened this morning breaks the feeling of a living world. Here is how to give each piece of news a shelf life, pick the freshest one, say when it happened in the right words, and not repeat it.
Why this works
News is true only for a while, and people talk first about what is freshest. Giving each item a shelf life, and wording its age in plain days, keeps a villager from chatting about a storm as if it had just passed.
When not to use it
Skip it for a village whose people are meant to be stuck in the past, or for lore that never expires, such as a legend. Those lines should not fade; give them no shelf life, or tell them in a different, steady voice.
