Point the objective arrow along the route the player can actually walk
In a level with ledges, drops and ladders, a straight arrow to the goal points at a wall, or into a pit with no way back. And an arrow that flips between two nearly equal routes makes players dizzy. Here is how to point the way that works and keep the arrow calm.
Why this works
An arrow is a promise that this way leads there, so it must follow what the player can really do, with climbs costing more and drops going one way. Remembering the last direction and changing it only for a clearly better one stops it from twitching.
When not to use it
Skip it in an open field with nothing in the way, where pointing straight at the goal is correct and cheaper. Also skip it when the player is meant to search without help.
