Change a quest's target in an update without erasing or gifting saved progress
After a patch, "defeat twenty" becomes "defeat fifteen", or the other way round. Players with a save in the middle see broken numbers, finished quests that reopen, or rewards that are suddenly claimable twice. Here is how to move old saves to the new numbers fairly.
Why this works
When you change a rule, you must ask what the player was told. What they have finished or collected is history and stays; what is still open can follow the new rule. That way no one loses a reward and no one is handed one for free.
When not to use it
Do not migrate quietly when the change is large, such as a different goal altogether; start a new quest and tell the players. Also keep the old rule for events that have a fixed end date.
