Does the monster hear a thrown bottle two rooms away behind a closed door?
Counting rooms between the noise and the listener gives the wrong answer as soon as doors and detours exist. A loud sound can find a quieter way around. This entry works out how loud a noise is in every room, for a fair and predictable listener.
Why this works
Sound spreads along every path and the loudest arrival wins, so the shortest way is not always the one that carries it. A closed door costs more than a few extra open rooms, and the check has to follow that.
When not to use it
Overkill for a small level where the monster simply hears everything within a set distance. It also fails in games where players must be able to learn the rule, so show the sound's reach or the guesswork will feel unfair.
