The autosave happened one step before death and every reload ends the same way
The game saved at the worst moment: a monster at arm's length and almost no health. Now the player reloads into a hopeless second. This entry picks a calm earlier moment to return to instead of simply the latest one.
Why this works
A save is only a kindness if the player can survive after loading it. Choosing a moment that was calm, and had been calm for a while, means reloading gives a real second chance instead of a trap that repeats.
When not to use it
Wrong for games where danger never stops, such as a nonstop runner, or where saves are rare on purpose and part of the tension. There, save only at fixed places and say so clearly, so nobody loses progress by surprise.
