Spielerando

The player cannot pick up the key item because the bag is full of junk

Survival horror limits what you can carry. If the player collected every optional thing on the way, the one item the story needs has no room. This entry checks the worst case of a route and tells you how many slots it really requires.

Why this works

A game must never become unfinishable because of a choice the player could not have known mattered. Testing against a player who takes everything and drops nothing finds the point where the story can get stuck.

When not to use it

Not needed if key items go into their own pocket that never fills, or if players can always drop or swap freely. The easiest fix is often to remove the limit for story items instead of tuning the bag around it.
