The host leaves and the friend who takes over has an older version of the world
When a game moves from one host to another without a server, picking just anyone can send everybody back in time. Here is how to choose the person who knows the most and how the others catch up, and what honestly gets lost.
Why this works
Whoever has seen the most can pass it on to the others, but a peer that is behind cannot help one that is ahead. Picking the most up to date player, with a fixed tie rule, lets everyone reach the same answer without any talking.
When not to use it
Wrong where a stable machine is available, such as a rented server that never leaves, or where the host must be trusted, as in a ranked game. Then keep one fixed host and restart it, instead of passing the role around.
