A dark bargain lends you strength now, and the energy you regain next goes to pay it
A pact that gives power at a cost is only a threat if the cost really lands. Here is how borrowed energy comes with interest, why recovery must pay the lender before the player, and what to do when the bar is nearly full already.
Why this works
A bargain is only a temptation if it really costs something later. Paying the lender before the player gets anything back means the power was truly borrowed, and charging only for what was received keeps the price fair when the bar is nearly full.
When not to use it
Do not use it when the pact should be a gift with a story cost only, such as a curse that shows up in the plot but not in the numbers. Also skip it in a game where players dislike keeping track of what they owe.
