A calming charm soaks up fear damage, but not all of it and not for long
A protective charm that blocks every point of fright makes the scary parts pointless. Here is how a temporary shield can take only a share of each hit, fade with time and stay under a ceiling, with the leftover reaching the real meter.
Why this works
A shield that stops everything ends the tension, so the charm takes only a share of each blow and weakens over time. Some fright always gets through, which keeps the player watching the real meter and treating the charm as help, not safety.
When not to use it
Skip it in a game where fear is not a meter at all, or where a charm should be a clear on and off switch the player can understand at a glance. Then let it block one named threat completely and be used up.
