Spielerando

A burst of adrenaline hides the tiredness, then sends the bill all at once

In a chase the hero should feel no tiredness, yet running forever at no cost would break the story. Here is how the tiredness is only put aside during the rush, how much comes back afterwards and what stops the crash from being unfair.

Why this works

Adrenaline does not remove tiredness, it hides it. Setting the effort aside during the rush and charging it back with a little extra afterwards matches how a body feels, and makes the player decide whether the escape is worth the crash.

When not to use it

Avoid it where the rush should be a pure reward, such as a power-up in an arcade game, or where a delayed penalty would confuse a younger player. There, give a short boost and a clear cooldown instead of a hidden bill.
