Come back from another app without animations jumping or timers exploding
On a phone the game is frozen whenever the player answers a message, and when they return the clock says a minute has passed. Animations then leap to the end, particles fly off the screen and cooldowns finish at once. Here is how to separate the time that moves pictures from the time that really passed.
Why this works
A long absence is not a long frame. Pictures should move only a tiny step after you return, while things promised in real time, like a reward or a waiting period, must count the true time away. Keeping two kinds of time lets each be honest.
When not to use it
Do not use it for games that should keep running unseen, such as a live match against other people, or where the world must be caught up in full. Then work out what happened while away, or rejoin the shared game.
