Decide whether a swiped card leaves or comes back, and how fast it moves

Dragging a card sideways to dismiss it seems simple until a short, fast flick should count and a long, slow drag that the player then reverses should not. The finishing movement must also continue the finger's pace. Here are the rules for the decision and the time it takes.

Why this works

A swipe has two parts: how far and how fast. A person who flicks is telling you their intent even if the finger moved little, and one who changes their mind mid-gesture should be believed, so both distance and direction of speed matter.

When not to use it

Do not use it where swiping away destroys something important and cannot be undone, or on screens with many gestures that compete. Offer a visible button and an undo bar instead of relying on a flick.
