Show a loading spinner only when loading is slow, and keep it long enough to be seen

A spinner that flashes for a tenth of a second looks like a glitch, yet a game that shows nothing for two seconds looks frozen. The answer is two small delays working together, and one of them depends on the other in a way that is easy to get wrong. Here is the rule.

Why this works

A spinner that flashes for an instant looks like a glitch, and one that shows up for something instant adds worry. Waiting a moment before showing it, then keeping it up long enough to register, makes quick loads feel instant and slow ones feel handled.

When not to use it

Do not use it for work that always takes a long time, like a big download, where a real progress bar tells more. Also skip it where waiting must be obvious from the start, and show it right away.
