Pick a landmark for directions that the traveller cannot mix up
"Look for the cave near the big tree" is useless in a forest full of big trees, and the villager giving directions should know better. Here is how to choose, from everything near the target, the one landmark that is close and that no other landmark of its kind can be mistaken for.
Why this works
A traveller does not measure; they look for a thing and stop at the first one that fits. Directions work when the named thing is the only one that fits near the target, so judge a landmark by what it could be confused with.
When not to use it
Skip it when the player has a map marker, a compass or a guide who walks along. Then the words only add flavour, and a long hunt for the perfect landmark is wasted. Let the marker do the work and keep the speech short.
