Tell which horror puzzles make players leave the window to look up the answer
A puzzle that sends many players away to search for help is one they find unclear, and some never come back from that search. This entry shows how to spot such puzzles without watching anyone, only from how long the game window was out of focus, and what to do about the ones that never return.
Why this works
A long absence in the middle of a puzzle is the closest thing to hearing I am stuck. Leaving the window shows the difficulty without recording what the player searched for, and lookups that end in leaving show the puzzle lost them.
When not to use it
Wrong where looking things up is part of the game, such as clues in the real world or a manual, or on devices where messages often steal focus. Add hints inside the game and watch a few players.
