Bob the first-person view with every footstep, and stop it gently when you stop

A walking bob that runs on the clock slides along when you crouch, speeds up at the wrong moment and snaps back when you stop. Here is how to tie the bob to the ground covered, so it matches your pace, fades away softly and stays still in the air.

Why this works

A step is a piece of ground covered, not a tick of the clock. Tying the sway to distance walked makes it match the pace you feel and the sound of your feet, stand still when you do, and fade softly by easing its size.

When not to use it

Skip it for players who feel sick from moving views, in games where steady aim matters most, or when the character is not walking, such as riding or flying. Offer a switch, or leave the view still.
