Build a game where you tap in time with notes and are judged on how close you were
A rhythm game compares the time of each tap with the time of the nearest note and hands out a verdict. The pitfalls are tapping the wrong one of two close notes, notes nobody tapped, and a device that plays sound a little late. Here is the judging core.
Why this works
Music is measured in time, while pictures arrive unevenly, so judging by frames would grade the same tap differently on different screens. Using real time, and giving each tap to the nearest note, makes the verdict the player's own.
When not to use it
Skip it when sound and picture cannot be matched closely, such as streamed play with delay, or when the game should forgive loose timing. Use a wide window, or ask only for rhythm in a relaxed way.
