Let a garden pet wander the pen, stop to graze and pick real new spots
A sheep or hen that picks a random spot every few seconds often picks one right beside itself, shuffles two steps and stops, over and over. Or it walks to the fence and stands in it. Here is a short routine for a pet that moves with purpose, rests in between, and always has somewhere worth going.
Why this works
Living things alternate between rest and purpose. A pet that always has a goal worth walking to, and pauses in between, reads as having a mind; tiny random steps read as a glitch, because nobody walks to a spot two paces away.
When not to use it
Skip it when the pet should react to the player, follow, flee or fetch something. A pet that picks its own spots ignores everything around it, so give it the player's position as the goal instead.
