Detect a double tap to dash without triggering it by holding or by mixing directions

Tapping left twice to dash sounds simple, but holding the key fires it, a tap left then right counts as a pair, and a slow frame can swallow the second tap. Here is the small bit of timing that tells a real double tap from everything else.

Why this works

A double tap means two deliberate presses, not a key that happens to be down. Watching only the moment a key goes down, and forgetting it after use or after a different direction, makes the gesture mean one thing and nothing else.

When not to use it

Avoid it on touch screens or with players who struggle with fast taps, and when a dash is needed often. Give the dash its own button or a swipe, which is easier to hit and to remember.
