Spielerando

Tell the player where something lies in words, like north-east and far

A villager who says the cave is north-east of here has to be right, and not off by a quarter turn because up on the screen is down in the numbers. Here is a way to turn two positions into one of eight directions and a distance word, with the borders in the right places.

Why this works

Words must match the picture the player sees. If up on the screen is north, the numbers must agree, and fixed borders between eight slices of the same size make the same spot always get the same word.

When not to use it

Skip it when the map turns with the player, or when the world has no north, as on a ship's deck or in a maze. Use words relative to the player, such as ahead or to your left, or name landmarks instead.

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "Tell the player where something lies in words, like north-east and far" (read_entry directions-in-words-from-coordinates) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
