Players say my horror scenes are just black and they cannot see anything
Dark is the point of the genre, but a screen where nothing can be made out is a bug. Here is a way to measure a picture the way a player's eye would, say whether it is too dark, and how much brighter it has to be without losing the mood.
Why this works
A dark picture works when the eye can still find one clear thing to hold on to. A few bright spots tell you more than the overall average does. So measure the bright end of the picture, because that is where the player's reading happens.
When not to use it
Do not trust it for scenes where the dark itself is the challenge, such as a level where you can only see by lamp light. Use a measure from the lit area, and let players adjust brightness for their own screen and room.
