Split players into two teams that are really even
Picking the strongest player for one side and the next for the other looks fair and often is not, because the last players decide the sum. For a lobby of ten or fewer, the best split can simply be found. Here is how to find it quickly and what to do when the player count is odd.
Why this works
Taking turns picking the best remaining player feels fair but only looks at the next choice. Checking every possible split looks at the end result, and for a small group there are few enough to simply find the best.
When not to use it
Skip it when players want to choose their own friends, or when the ratings are guesses that no one trusts. A split that feels forced can spoil the mood more than a small gap in strength.
