Spielerando

The stretching background effect for a moment of realisation or dread

The face stays the same size while the room behind it seems to stretch or collapse. It is a famous way to say that something is wrong, but the two things you change must move together, and there are limits you will hit quickly.

Why this works

The eye reads size and space separately. Keeping the subject's size fixed while the sense of depth changes makes the world feel as if it is moving without anything having moved, which is why it signals that something is off.

When not to use it

Do not overuse it. Repeated, it turns from a shock into a gimmick, and in a game with a free camera it fights the player's control. It also looks wrong on flat, side-on art. Keep it for one scripted moment per story.
