Late in my idle game the number stops growing even though income is positive

Computers keep only so many digits, and past a certain size a small gain is rounded away completely. This entry shows how to work out the size at which your game starts losing income, how much one-by-one adding loses compared with adding at once, and what to do.

Why this works

A computer keeps a number with a fixed count of digits, so the bigger a number is, the coarser its steps get. Once a gain is smaller than the step, it vanishes. Knowing where that point lies lets you check it long before any player gets there.

When not to use it

Skip it when your game can never get near such sizes, such as a game with a few thousand points at most; the check then only adds work. When it does matter, a special type for huge numbers is the fix, not more care.
