Keep a "win three levels in a row" quest honest when the player quits mid-level
Players learn that closing the game before a loss keeps the streak alive. Others lose a streak to a crash they did not cause. Here is how to treat quitting, crashing and resuming so the streak means something and stays fair.
Why this works
If quitting costs nothing, a streak means nothing, because anyone can walk away before a loss. Recording that a level has begun before play starts makes leaving a decision with a price, and it survives crashes and reloads.
When not to use it
Do not count a quit as a loss for a game played in short breaks, on a phone for example, or for a gentle game. Let the player resume the level and keep the streak instead.
