Let a wounded animal run away, unless it is cornered or guarding young
Wild animals that fight to the last point of health feel like monsters. Animals that always run feel too easy. This entry gives each animal its own courage and a few clear exceptions, so hunting feels like a real animal with real reasons.
Why this works
Real animals protect themselves first, and the player can only read them if the reason is visible. When fleeing follows clear conditions such as pain, an open way out and young nearby, the player can learn the rules and use them.
When not to use it
Skip it for creatures that should never stop, such as undead, machines or a final boss, and when fleeing animals would only make the player chase them across the map. Let those fight to the end or hold back.
